After a bit of hunting around I finally found some VW / Audi identifying marks which suggest it's from an Audi 100 / 200.

I think it should be quite straight forward to bodge the block & box together once I have found a suitable flywheel and clutch.

This is the space in the back of the van that will become the new engine bay.

After only 15 mins with the 9" grinder :-)

It was only a quick 1/2 hours testing, but the initial results look good. The engine & box will sit nice and low and the drive flanges from the box are almost in line with the centre of the arches.
